Natin ollessa töissä me vietimme muutaman rennon päivän biitsillä.

The main reason for us to go back to Phuket instead of going to some other beach destination where we hadn’t been before, was to visit our old friend Nattaya. We knew her from our student days (she used to be Gina’s roommate in Vaasa) and nowadays she is living in Phuket where she owns a travel agency with her husband. We hadn’t seen each other for at least ten years so we were really looking forward to catching up with her. Times have changed alright – back in our student days Natti was a care-free party girl whereas now she works around the clock. While Natti was minding the office we spent a couple of relaxed days on the beach.

Baby elephant on the beach

Riding the elephant

Phuket is a big island and there are many different areas to be discovered. Back in the day we stayed at the super-touristy Patong where bars and bazars line the streets and the beach was chock-a-block full of sunbeds and sun-burnt tourists. Then we appreciated the night life and shopping whereas now we were happy to stay at the less touristy area where Natti lives, riding to the beach on Natti’s scooter. Also here the beach was of course occupied only by tourists, as the locals don’t care for lying on the beach, but there are far fewer people here and not too many touts trying to sell you things. The prices were horrendous though – good job we had lunch before getting to the beach, as the same fried rice with vegetables that I had in a local restaurant for 40 baht would have cost 200 baht on the beach. It was a nice change to spend a couple of days doing nothing, lying on the beach reading or napping, but it gets really boring after a while. On the third day we were ready for something else and decided to book a tour through Natti’s travel agency with a good discount. We ended up booking a trip that included an hour of driving on ATV, an elephant ride and a monkey show. Now anyone who knows me, knows that driving anything is not really my thing, but as Gina likes this sort of thing I also wanted to give it a go. As for the elephants and the monkeys, we were a little wary as often in these countries any activities involving animals border on animal torture rather than entertainment but we thought we’ll give it a go as well, as it’s included and it would have been a little silly to travel such a long way (more than an hour’s drive) only for 1 hour of driving ATV. After the long and bumpy ride on the back of a pick-up truck we got there and the first spectacle was the monkey show. A cute monkey, that according to the guy used to work for a farmer collecting coconuts from the tree, did some tricks with coconuts when he felt like doing it, while at times he couldn’t have care less about the show and was off doing his thing, ignoring the guy trying to get him to do tricks. At least this monkey didn’t look too badly off and he was cute alright. The elephant ride was supposed to be half an hour but I doubt it was more than 15 minutes altogether, we just did a little circle around the area where the elephants were kept. It was not the first time we have ridden an elephant so didn’t matter too much, but if I had actually paid something for this bit I wouldn’t have been too impressed. Then it was time for the main part of the programme, the ATV driving which turned out to be quite good fun. Once I freaked out a bit, as I managed to drive on top of a fairly big rock, lost control of the vehicle for a little while and seemed to be headed inevitably to the ditch at what felt like great speed. Steering was hard work at best of times as it was just a bit too heavy for me but I managed narrowly to avoid that disaster (and other disasters along the way) and made it back safely. Gina would have liked to continue driving longer, as out of one hour we spent less than half an hour actually driving and the rest of the time visiting the Big Buddha temple. For me that was a nice surprise as I didn’t know we were going to visit the temple where you could see nice views over the area and the Big Buddha itself was pretty impressive as well. All in all, had we paid the full price the trip wouldn’t have been worth it, but with the good discount we got through Natti it was a nice way to spend half a day. If you are visiting many areas of Thailand, I would recommend doing activities in other parts rather than Phuket, the prices are really inflated and don’t offer good value at all.
Big Buddha

The monkey show guy was not much of a photographer, cue completely blurry pic!

On the boat with Natti

On the beach with the speedboats

When Natti finally managed to escape from her office, we headed to an island trip to check out a couple of islands where she hadn’t been yet. It involved firstly sitting in a minibus for well over an hour on the way to the pier, where you could have free coffee (always a benefit!) while waiting for the boat to depart. The fully packed speedboat travelled first to Coral Island that didn’t exactly match our (vague) expectations. I suppose when thinking of an island you always expect it be to more quiet, calm, like an island-getaway sort of thing where people live on “island time”. Well, it wasn’t like that. The beach of this particular island was chock-a-block full of (Chinese) tourists, outrageously overpriced food and drink (100 baht for two pieces of pineapple, really?!) and similarly overpriced activities from parasailing to banana boating. Natti concentrated on taking pictures and filming for their website, we hung out on the beach and in the sea wherever we could find a space among the Chinese. Not a great experience, Coral Island, but the next one, Raya Island was a bit better. Maybe there were just as many people but it was a larger area so it didn’t feel so crowded. This is where we had a passable buffet lunch included in the trip and later on went for a snorkelling trip that was also included. Snorkelling was nice with colourful fish, starfish and some coral, but it wasn’t comparable to Great Barrior Reef. After that we had to face the long bumpy ride back home first in a speedboat and then in the minibus whose shock absorbers had definitely passed their best-before date.

On our last day in Phuket we had the flight in the evening so we still had time to hang out with Natti, have lunch together and go see the Saraseen Bridge that joins Phuket to the mainland. We didn’t have a chance to go to Phuket town due to lack of time but we probably didn’t miss much. It was not a very typical tourist experience in Phuket but it was nice to catch up with Natti and to see that not all of Phuket is a tourist trap yet. We spent one night in Bangkok and the following evening hopped on the night train to go up north to Chiang Mai.
