Preerian Pariisi - Paris of the Prairie: Saskatoon

Saskatoon seems to be considered a bit of a joke amongs other Canadians - all our hosts were wondering why on earth would we go there, admitting they had never been there and couldn’t think of a reason to go. I will admit that the town itself holds little of interest - we spent one day in downtown and could hardly think of anything else to do but wandering around the river bank. However, as usual through couchsurfing you find so much more to any city than your basic tourist stuff.

Saskatoon by the river

Sunset at the rail tracks

We spent three nights at Lori and Glen’s place and they really made our stay spectacular. Our very first evening, after enjoying a supper and some beer at their comfortable house, they took us to see some bison (cattle, not free bison) and a prairie sunset which was truly amazing. I can totally see why Saskatchewan is known as the land of the living skies - the way the colour of the clouds was changing from deep dark thunderstorm-blue to bright candyfloss pink through light orange was nothing short of spectacular. Though you can never really capture all that by camera, we made a good try nevertheless. The place where we were admiring the sunset was right at the train tracks and I mentioned wishing that the train is not coming right at this point. Glen said in a very matter-of-fact way “you would see it coming miles away”. Good point, of course you would as there are no trees or absolutely anything to obstruct the view in the prairie. According to the local joke, if your dog runs away you can still see it running away from you two days later, so it is not easy to really get away.

Menimme myös käymään Wanuskewin Heritage Parkissa, jota kutsun nyt nimellä perinnepuisto (moista sanaa tuskin on suomenkielessä), jossa sangen kohtuullisella 8 CADin sisäänpääsymaksulla oppii paljon paikallisista alkuperäiskansoista. Siellä voi vaellella mielensä mukaan omin päin patikkareittejä pitkin (kesäkuumalla patikoidessa kannattaa pitää mielessä, ettei preerialla ole juuri puita eli varjoa on turha hakea) tai osallistua opastetuille kierroksille. Wanuskewinissa on myös monta kertaa päivän aikana erilaisia ohjelmia, me osallistuimme tiipiin rakennus-esitykseen sekä intiaanien tanssiesitykseen. Tanssiesitystä vetävä mies ja hänen teini-ikäinen tyttärensä tanssivat kuumassa auringonpaisteessa minkä sielusta lähti. Täällä ei tule ollenkaan sellaista tunnelmaa, että tyyppejä puetaan kostyymeihin turistien iloksi, vaan alkuperäiskansat esittelevät kulttuuriaan omilla ehdoillaan valistaakseen muita ihmisiä. Nähdäkseni kaikki paikalla töissä olevat kuuluivat alkuperäisväestöön.
At the Wanuskewin

We also visited the Wanuskewin Heritage Park, where you can learn a lot about the First Nations peoples living in the area with a very reasonable entrance fee of 8 CAD per person. You can wander around the place at your own pace, do some hikes around the area (while hiking in the summer it’s good to keep in mind there is practically no shade so it can be a really hot hike) or join a guided tour. There are also several different programmes throughout the day, we joined a presentation of teepee rising and a native dance performance. The chief and his teenaged daughter doing the performance were dancing their hearts out in the heat of the sun. Here you really don’t get the idea that these are just people dressed in costumes for the benefit of the tourists, but that the First Nations are introducing their culture to other people on their own terms. As far as I could tell all the people working in the park were native.

Apart from everything else, Lori also happens to be a canoe guide so she and her friend took us canoeing on a lake nearby. What a great experience it was to paddle around the shining lake on a gorgeous sunny day, spotting beaver dams and birds. Suddently the wind rose, making our return surprisingly challenging, but we managed and thoroughly enjoyed our day!

Saskatoonista lähtiessämme edessä oli minkä odotin olevan koko Kanadan turneen huippukohta: Kalliovuorten Kansallispuisto!
When leaving Saskatoon we were headed to what I expected to be the highlight of all Canada: The Rocky Mountains National Park!
