Viimeinen pysäkki Kanadassa - Our Last Stop in Canada: Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island on pienen maan kokoinen saari Kanadan länsirannikolla, jonka pääkaupunkia Victoriaa mainostetaan "mukavana päiväretkenä Vancouverista". Sanoisinko anglismin minun takapuoleni.

Ferry to Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island, located off the West Coast of Canada, is size of a small country. The capital, Victoria, is advertised as being a "lovely day trip from Vancouver". Yeah, right. Sure, it is a lovely town, but it takes easily four hours to get from Vancouver downtown to Victoria downtown by taking a combination of Skytrain, bus, ferry and bus again. So if you are heading out to the island, I think you should have at least a couple of days to spend there. If you have more time and you want to see lots of nature, you can easily spend a week on Vancouver Island. We only had three days left in Canada, so that had to be enough for us.

On the ferry

Parliament Buildings at the Harbour

Fisherman's Wharf

It is a long but pleasant journey, especially the ferry trip (17.20 CAD per person one way) during which you will see amazing scenery. Vancouver Island enjoys the most temperate climate of Canada so it makes a nice visit even in the winter time. At the time of our visit at the end of August it was all sunny and mild. When we finally got to downtown Victoria our host Leanne came to meet us and showed us around this charming historical town. Victoria is an old city by Canadian standards and full of beautiful architecture. We strolled around the harbour area where you can also see the impressive Parliament Buildings. The harbour also functions as an airport for the float planes, which was a really interesting curiosity for us - I have never seen so many float planes in one place! Due to the fact that much of Canada is such remote wilderness, small float planes are used a lot to for example transport both supplies and people to the remote settlements. Another interesting place to visit on the other side of the harbour is Fisherman's Wharf, a truly charming floating pier with small bars, food stalls as well as people actually living in their little boat houses. We finished the evening by meeting up with some of Leanne's friends in a local microbrewery's pub where we enjoyed really tasty and surprisingly affordable beers.

Fisherman's Wharf

Mystic Beach

As lovely as the town of Victoria is, we wanted to also see some nature so we rented a car together with Leanne and she drove us to Mystic Beach, located in Juan de Fuca Provincial Park. We did a little hiking route through a spectacular old-growth forest to a beautiful beach. The ancient forest with its gigantic trees was an awe-inspiring sight, it's the sort of place where you just expect a dinosaur barge out any moment. Mystic Beach is a popular camping spot on a trail of 50 kilometres, so there were several exhausted hikers on the beach. Although our hike had only been a couple of kilometres, nevertheless it was nice to relax and have our picnic lunch on the beach enjoying the sunshine.

While Victoria is not a very big city with its 80 000 inhabitants, it has nice hipster vibe to it. The streets are full of all sorts of people, one cooler than the other and the alleys are lined with cute little shops and cafes. Especially the ultra-narrow alleys of Chinatown were full of interesting random shops. This was our last stop in Canada and now we needed to change gears from backpacking to life of luxury - the cruise to Alaska was ahead of us!
