Paluu Los Angelesiin - Back to Los Angeles

Edellisellä kerralla emme olleet oikein vaikuttuneita kaupungista, mutta tällä kertaa majoituimmekin kauas keskikaupungin häslingistä ihmeen edulliseen hostelliin Long Beachilla.

Rugged coast line

After getting back to nature at the national parks it was time for us to head back into the urban beat of Los Angeles. The last time we had not been very impressed with the city. This time, however, we chose to stay far away from the hustle and bustle of downtown or Hollywood by staying at a remarkably inexpensive hostel in Long Beach. This turned out to be a great idea for us road-weary travellers, as the sleepy little town of San Pedro didn’t feel anything like Los Angeles and we really enjoyed calming down for a couple of days doing pretty much nothing. We spent the days doing little walks along the cliffs of the coast line and one day went to the nearby Cabrillo beach, which at the end of September was completely deserted. Ok, swimming was not recommended due to bad water quality, but that’s ok - we find the Pacific waters too cold for swimming anyway. In any case it was really enjoyable to relax on the beach.

Views along our daily walk

Täällä on mahdottoman söpöjä taloja pienine viehättävine puutarhoineen. Ihanaa aluetta ja kanaalin varrella asumisessa on varmasti charminsa, vaikka minua ainakin ärsyttäisi pällistelevät turistit - jos siis asuisin siellä enkä olisi itse pällistelevä turisti.

Breakdancing at Venice Beach

At the Venice canals

We also went to have a look at Venice Beach (about 30 miles away, but worlds apart) which was full of people sunbathing, cycling, roller-skating as well as just chilling. Venice Beach Boardwalk was like its reputation, a colourful weed-smelling human zoo where a baffling variety of people sat by the street selling the strangest collection of souvenirs. There were breakdancers doing battle (my vernacular on this topic is something overheard in the 90's so that might have gone completely wrong) completing the most astonishing series of movements. Venice Beach is certainly an amusing and interesting place to hang out for a day! We also went to check out the Venice Canals which is a lot quieter, largely car-free area. You can walk along the canals along pedestrian street and cross the canals on little pedestrian bridges. The houses along the canals are impossibly cute with their little gardens. Absolutely lovely area to live, I am sure, although I would be annoyed by the gawking tourists - assuming that I lived there and wasn't one of the gawking tourists.

Kävimme oluella baarissa, jossa oli sunnuntaibrunssi drag-show’n kera täydessä vauhdissa. Oli hauskaa olla omiensa joukossa! Beverly Hillsissä emme olleet niinkään omiemme joukossa hienojen designer-putiikkien keskellä, mutta oli ihan hauskaa kierrellä kuuluisat Rodeo Drivet ja katsella meitä paremmin pukeutuneita ihmisiä. Kävimme kurkkimassa myös Regent Beverly Wilshare-hotellia, jossa kuvattiin osa Pretty Woman-leffaa. Kaiken kaikkiaan tämä oli mukava päivä, jonka aikana näimme turistille paljon miellyttävämmän puolen Los Angelesista - olkoonkin se valkoisten hyvin toimeentulevien tyyppien kupla. Tähän päättyi Kalifornian kierros, seuraavaksi nokka kohti syntistä Las Vegasia!

Oh-so-gay WeHo

We had to venture once more into the city of Los Angeles to see the fancy neighbourhood of Beverly Hills as well as West Hollywood. The west end of Santa Monica Boulevard was finally the kind of area we had been hoping for - a nice area to walk around in with lots of restaurants, bars and cafes. This part is known as gay town and most of the establishments were frequented by rainbow folk. The streets were full of muscular guys with little lap dogs - it was easy to spot the current trends in West Hollywood! We had a beer at a bar with Sunday brunch and a drag show in full swing. It was fun to be among our people! In Beverly Hills you couldn't really say we were among our people, what with all the designer boutiques, but it was fun to walk around the famous Rodeo Drive looking at better-dressed people than us. We also went to see the Regent Beverly Wilshare Hotel where Pretty Woman was partly filmed. All in all it was a nice day that allowed us to see a much more pleasant and tourist-friendly part of LA - even if it was a bubble of white well-to-do people. This was the end of our Californian tour, next it was Sin City Las Vegas!
