Osa Neljäkymmentäkuusi – Part Forty-Six: Auckland

Vietimme viimeisen yömme Australiassa jälleen Melbournen lentokentällä, mikä ei ollut mikään erityisen mukava kokemus eikä saanut nukuttua juuri ollenkaan. Niinpä saavuimme Aucklandiin sopivasti ikään kuin aikaeroväsymystä potien, vaikkei aikaeroa ollut kuin pari tuntia. Hostimme Hamish tuli meitä vastaan lentokentälle, mikä oli suuri helpotus – mitä vähemmän joudumme kantamaan näitä painavia rinkkoja, sen parempi. Kävimme kotona kääntymässä ja heittämässä rinkat sinne, sitten menimme läheiseen puistoon katsomaan ilmaista reggae-bändin konserttia ja syömään. Siellä oli kiva tunnelma, aurinko paistoi ja letkeä musiikki soi. Väsymyksemme takia menimme kuitenkin piakkoin takaisin kotiin ja otimme illan rennosti. 

We spent our last night in Australia once again at the Melbourne airport which was not the most pleasant of experiences and we could hardly get any sleep. Therefore on arrival to Auckland we felt kind of jetlagged even though there was only a couple of hours of time difference. Our host Hamish came to meet us at the airport which was a great relief – the less time we have to spend carrying these bloody heavy backpacks, the better. We dropped off the luggage at his place and went to a nearby park to see a free concert by a local reggae band and to get a bite to eat. The atmosphere was great with the sun shining and the chillax music playing. As we were so tired we didn’t stay long though and spent the evening relaxing at Hamish’s place. 

Seuraavat päivät vietimme tutustuen Aucklandiin, joka on Uuden-Seelannin suurin kaupunki (vaikkei olekaan pääkaupunki) 1,3 miljoonan asukkaan väkiluvullaan. Kaupunki tuntuu koostaan huolimatta melko rauhalliselta paikalta, jossa on rennot vibat – tykkäsin kovasti. Kiertelimme Wynyard Quarterin satamakaupunginosaa, jossa oli sunnuntaina retromarkkinat (myytiin vintage-vaatteita, siellä oli swing-tanssit meneillään ja retroautoja esittelyssä), hengailimme Albert Parkissa, kiipesimme Mt. Edenin huipulle, joka on korkein Aucklandin monista tulivuorista (tämä on uinunut jo vuosisatoja, kraatterissa kasvaa ruohoa) ja huipulta avautuu hyvät näköalat kaupungin yli. Kaiken rennon hengailun lomassa ehdimme käydä Aucklandin Art Galleryssa (ilmainen!), joka oli mielenkiintoinen paikka, varsinkin maori-muotokuvat kiinnostivat. Kävimme myös Devonportissa, joka oli 10 minuutin lauttamatkan päässä kaupungista. Se oli viehättävä pieni kylä erikoisine kauppoineen ja ravintoloineen sekä tulivuorineen, jonka huipulle sai jälleen kerran kiivetä maisemia ihastelemaan.

The next couple of days we spent exploring Auckland which is the biggest city of NZ (though it’s not the capital) with its population of 1.3 million. Despite being fairly big the city really has a relaxed Pacific vibe and it’s a lovely place to hang out – we really liked it. We strolled around the Wynyard Quarter around the harbour where on Sunday they had a vintage market going on (people selling vintage stuff, swing dancing was going on and vintage cars displayed), hung out in Albert Park, climbed Mt. Eden which is the highest one of the several volcanos around the city (it has been dormant for centuries and the crater is growing grass) and you have a lovely view over the city. Among all the chilling we had time to visit the Auckland Art Gallery (it’s free!) that was really interesting, especially the Maori portraits. We also visited the charming village of Devonport that was just a short ferry ride away from the CBD of Auckland. You can find a variety of interesting shops, cute restaurants and cafes there and there are also several volcanic peaks you can climb to enjoy the views over Auckland. 

Yksi päivä hujahti Waiheke-saarella, joka oli pitemmän (ja kalliimman, 34 NZD per henki!) lauttamatkan päässä ja joka on kuuluisa viinitiloistaan. Tarkoitus oli vierailla parilla viinitilalla, maistella viinejä ja ostaa ehkä pullo tai pari. Olimme ostaneet päiväkortin Hop-cardin, jolla saattoi 16 NZD:lla ajella kaupungin julkisilla kulkuvälineillä minkä mieli teki. Myös saaren bussit kuuluivat hintaan, joten luulimme sen olevan helppoa päästä viinitilalta toiselle bussilla, mutta toisin kävi. En ollut tutustunut aikatauluun, kun näytti että viinitiloille menee kolme eri bussilinjaa ja kuvittelin niitä menevän koko ajan. Ei näin. Kävi ilmi, että bussi menee vain kerran tunnissa tavaten mantereelta tulevan lautan ja jotenkin onnistuimme missaamaan sen bussin. Ei huvittanut seisoskella siellä tuntia odottaen seuraavaa bussia, mutta matka näytti ihan liian pitkältä kävellä – ainakin kymmenen ellei viisitoista kilometriä. Niinpä kokeilimme liftaamista ensimmäistä kertaa tällä reissulla (ja ensimmäistä kertaa varmaan kymmeneen vuoteen!) eikä siinä kauaa mennyt, ennen kuin saimme kyydin läheiseen kylään ja sieltä hetken odottelun jälkeen seuraava kuski vei meidät suoraan viinitilan ovelle. Goldie olikin hyvä valinta, sieltä sai todella hyviä viinejä kohtuuhintaan. Viininmaistelu maksoi 10 NZD per hlö ja siihen kuului neljä eri viiniä (kaksi valkoviiniä, kaksi punaviiniä). Jos jälkeen päin osti jotain, maistelu oli ilmainen. Hartaan maistelun ja harkinnan jälkeen päädyimme ostamaan pullon Sauvignon Blancia, joka oli ihan järjettömän hyvä kuiva valkoviini ja suht kohtuuhintainen; 25 NZD. Sitten olikin aika hypätä bussiin, jolla pääsimme seuraavalle viinitilalle. Siellä oli useampi tila ihan vierekkäin, päädyimme umpimähkään Topknots-tilalle, jossa maistelu toimi eri systeemillä: siellä sai tilata mitä tahansa viiniä tai olutta halusi, maisteluannos maksoi 2 NZD kipale. Päätimme kokeilla taas neljää viiniä, tällä kertaa jätimme punaviinit pois menusta (koska kuumana kesäpäivänä halusimme mieluummin valko- ja roseviinejä) ja raivostuimme kokeilemaan myös olutta ja siideriä. Hyvinhän ne taas maistuivat ja oli kiva istuskella ihan siinä viiniköynnösten vieressä maistelemassa – valitettavasti tällä tilalla ei ollut niin kohtuuhintaisia viinejä tarjolla, koska kaikki olisivat maksaneet 45 – 55 NZD per pullo, joten jätimme ostokset tekemättä. Kaiken tämän maistelun jälkeen päätimme suunnata yhdelle saaren valkohiekkaisista rannoista chillaamaan. Bussia odotellessa Gina huomasi, että läheinen aprikoosipuu notkui kypsistä hedelmistä ja poimi meille ihanan makeita aprikooseja – enpä ole moisia koskaan syönyt suoraan puista. Hyvä, että tuo vaimo on tuollainen selviytyjä.

Waiheke Island, known for its many wineries, made a nice day trip. It was a longer (and at 36 NZD per person for return, a lot more costly!) ferry ride from the city. Our intention was to visit a couple of wineries and possibly buy a bottle or two to enjoy with our host. We had bought a day pass (HOP card) which costs 16 NZD and allows unlimited public transport in the city, including the buses on the island, so we thought it would be a breeze getting from one winery to another. That didn’t go so well though – we hadn’t even looked at the timetable as it seemed there are three different bus lines going to the wineries, so we assumed there are plenty of buses to take. Not so – the bus only went once an hour to coincide with the ferry arriving from the mainland and we managed to miss that one. It didn’t seem sensible to hang around waiting for another hour and it was way too long to walk (probably at least ten, if not fifteen kilometres) so we tried hitch-hiking for the first time on this trip (actually, probably first time for about ten years!). It didn’t take long at all to catch a ride until the closest village and from there another guy drove us all the way to the door of the winery. Goldie turned out to be an excellent choice as they had absolutely lovely wines with relatively reasonable prices. It cost 10 NZD per person to do a wine tasting and with that you could try four wines (two white, two red). If after the tasting you buy something, you get the tasting for free. After a great consideration we chose to buy a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc that was just incredibly tasty dry white and at 25 NZD per bottle, suitable for our budget. After that we could catch the bus to go to the next winery. As there were many right next to each other, we chose randomly Topknot winery where they had a different system for the tasting – ordering a taster of any wine or beer cost 2 NZD and you can order as many as you like. We went for four different wines again (this time we left out the red ones since it was a hot day and the whites and the roses were more appealing to us) and decided to try out a beer and a cider as well. All were really good and it was nice to sit outside right next to the vineyards, but unfortunately this winery was not as reasonably priced as the previous one. At 44 – 55 NZD a bottle they were clearly out of the budget. After all this tasting we headed to one of the white-sanded beaches to chill out. While waiting for the bus, Gina spotted some very nice ripe apricots on a tree and picked a bunch of lovely fruits for us to eat. I have never eaten apricots that fresh, it’s very handy to have a hunter-gatherer as a wife!

Aucklandissa vierähti mukavasti neljä päivää Hamishin luona. Tykkäsin kaupungista kovasti, mutta eihän tänne tultu kaupunkeja katselemaan joten aika suunnata luonnon ihmeitä ihastelemaan – pohjoiseen siis kohti Bay of Islandsia!

It was a lovely four days’ stay in Auckland at Hamish’s place. We really liked the town but we didn’t come to NZ for the urban beat but for the amazing nature – time to head north towards Bay of Islands!
