We ended up in Tauranga a bit randomly because according to our original plan we would have gone to Rotorua at this stage, but our host was only available a couple of days later. Therefore we needed to find a place where to hang out a couple of days so I just picked a bit larger-looking town on Bay of Plenty. Tauranga turned out to be a fine choice since it is the largest town in the area with all of 115 00 inhabitants and a nice place to visit.

Tauranga city

Me with my temperamental bike

Tourists are pretty concentrated on the short beach street called The Strand where you can find loads of restaurants, bars, hotels and the only two hostels in town. We hadn’t booked anything in advance but managed to get a room for two nights in Harbourside Hostel that was about one minute’s walk from the bus stop. Private twin with our own bathroom cost 82 NZD per night (unfortunately no doubles were available) – after couchsurfing we wanted a bit of privacy and were happy enough to pay for it. You got half an hour of wifi per person for free but there was also a public free wifi that worked in the hostel. After checking in we decided to avail ourselves of the free bicycles offered by the hostel and check out the Waikareao reserve. It would have been way too far to walk but very convenient to cycle to, except that there was something wrong with my bike and the chain kept coming off at most inopportune moments. In any case we managed to get around, however painful it was at times and the area was really pleasant; lots of people cycling or walking around enjoying the nature.

Seuraavalle päivälle emme halunneet ottaa pyöriä, vaan menimme suosiolla bussilla noin 10 km:n päähän Mt. Maunganuille. Ihan Maunganuin juurella bussipysäkin vieressä on nimittäin Hot Pools, jonne pääsee 10 NZD pääsymaksulla pulikoimaan luonnollisesti kuumassa suolavedessä. Siellä on monia eri altaita eri lämpötiloilla, näin kuumana päivänä vähän viileämpikin vesi olisi kyllä kelvannut, mutta melko lailla kaikki altaat olivat lämpimiä.

Hiking up the Mt. Maunganui

The following day we opted not for the bikes, but for the bus to go to Mt. Maunganui which is the name of both a mountain (or a hill more like) and a town about 10 km from Tauranga. It seemed to be even more of a popular tourist spot than Tauranga full of hotels, motels, campgrounds etc. The beautiful white-sanded beaches were full of tourists sun-bathing and kayaking but we headed for the mountain. Maunganui was a sacred mountain for the Maoris and they still own the land rights. There are several routes you can hike up to the top, it’s hardly comparable to conquering Mt. Everest but it was a pleasant walk of about 45 minutes and the views over the Bay of Plenty from the top are really fantastic. We had a picnic lunch on the top and headed back down to soak our tired muscles (from the previous days’ hikes and cycling) at Hot Pools which are located right at the bus stop. The entrance is 10 NZD and they have several pools of naturally heated salty water at different temperatures. On a hot day like this we wouldn’t have minded a bit cooler water for a change, as all of them were pretty hot. We spent a nice hour there, after which we jumped back on the bus and headed to Tauranga. For dinner we wanted to do something a bit nicer for a change and found a fantastic Indian restaurant called Curry Hut where we enjoyed an absolutely delicious dinner.
Tauranga was hardly a highlight of the trip but it was a nice place to hang out and relax for a couple of days. The next destination however is one of the most eagerly anticipated places in NZ for us: the volcanic region of Rotorua!
