Pikkureissu Pohjois-Italiaan Osa 3: Lecco Short Trip to Northern Italy Part 3: Lecco

Charming Lecco Belltower

The train journey from Milan to Lecco was short and pleasant, even more so as we didn't even have to buy separate tickets for it - the 48-hour ticket we had bought for all public transport in Greater Milan area was enough to get us there. Upon alighting the train we saw just as charming a town as we had expected on basis of the very quick googling, although Lecco did turn out to be quite a bit bigger than I though - I had imagined a tiny village but actually there are almost 50 000 inhabitants there. The town was surrounded by snow-capped mountains and the lake reflected the gorgeous scenery around. The bell tower by the lake added to the beauty. We found our way to the bed and breakfast place just a few minutes' walk away and after checking in we headed into the heart of Lecco for a little look-see.

Chocolate Festival

We walked back to the lake to take pictures and to admire the lovely views. The sun was beginning to set so we had no other plans for the evening than having dinner and planning the following day. We wandered around the lively streets of the centre, where the locals had gathered for pre-dinner aperitivos. They didn't seem to feel the cold, as almost all the restaurants' outdoor seating areas and terraces were packed while hardly anybody seemed to opt for indoor seating. I didn't consider this to be terrace weather at all and it would have never crossed my mind to sit down to have a cold beer outside. We also happened to find a huge tent dedicated to the Chocolate Festival where you could taste and buy all sorts of luxurious hand-made chocolates from the local entrepreneurs. Obviously we couldn't leave without buying some goodies to take home. For dinner we had - you will never guess - pizza and wine (when in Rome and all that).

When in Italy, eat pizza

The unprepared hiker

For the next day our plan was to go hiking on the nearby summit called Piena d'Erna. I had read on TripAdvisor that it is easy to reach by local bus that will take the travellers straight to the cable car station. Here the lazy traveller can hop on the cable car to reach the summit but for us the point was obviously the hike up. With our extremely weak Italian language skills (basically we were just speaking Spanish adding different endings to the words to make it supposedly sound more Italian) we managed to find out where the bus goes from and buy the tickets - the bus journey was drama-free. As our original plan didn't include hiking we hadn't brought any of our usual gear - it is our typical MO to dress in hiking gear from head to toe with appropriate boots etc. and then laugh at tourists who are scrambling in the forest in jeans and trainers. Well, now we were the ones scrambling in the forest in jeans, trainers and (vegan) leather jackets and behold - we managed just as well as we would have with hiking boots!

Gina and the snowy (foggy) mountains

The hike itself would have been relatively easy, if we hadn't taken a few wrong turns along the way - the signage was better than on many hiking routes in Andalucia but still we managed to ignore it on a few occasion. Some point we already started to wonder if we will ever reach the top or do we just keep heading to wrong direction. In any case it was great being surrounded by nature, in the serenity of the forest, filling our lungs with the fresh mountain air. Eventually we found our way to the final station of the cable car and thank goodness there was a very cozy cafe where we could enjoy a well-earned cup of coffee to celebrate our success. The cafe was a typical Alp-style log hut full of other hikers in their hiking gear (unlike us) which added to the feeling that we were high up in the mountains. After fortifying ourselves with caffeine we walked another ten minutes or so to the view point, although the views were rather covered up by the dense fog. Every once in a while the fog cleared or the clouds moved enough to afford us glimpses of the valley below or the snow-capped mountain tops higher up - the views were really spectacular. This was probably the best day of our Italian trip - I guess I have to admit we enjoy spending time in the nature more than walking on the trendy streets of Milan.

Foggy views

Conquering the mountain was our last programme in Italy - after that, all that awaited us was the early train ride back to Milan the following morning and then Terravision bus to the airport. The trip was fine and it was actually lovely coming back to Malta's sunshine and temperatures of 25C after freezing in Italy! This little trip really cheered us up and there is no doubt we will go back to Italy several times during our time in Malta. The next holiday was going to be my trip to Finland in November (no, you will not see a trip report about that one!) and then Christmas in Istanbul!
