Ateenan Tunnelmia Osa 3 - Greetings from Athens Part 3

Vaikka pari edellistä päivää oltiin vietetty sangen intensiivisesti nähtävyyksien kimpussa, eiväthän ne Ateenan mahtavat näyt siihen loppuneet. Ei suinkaan. Aloitimme aurinkoisen aamun reippaasti Monasterakin alueelta, jossa Hadrianuksen kirjasto odotteli meitä kaikessa raunioituneessa komeudessaan.

At the Roman Agora

Although we had already spent two intensive days on the sightseeing mission, we still hadn't ran out of amazing things to see in Athens. No sir. We started the sunny morning in Monasteraki where Hadrian's Library awaited us in all its dilapidated glory. While it was interesting, I thought Roman Agora had more to see, I especially liked the Tower of the Winds. Both of these sights were also included in the combo ticket we had bought the first day, otherwise we would probably not have paid the entrance here - yes, they were both worth seeing but hardly comparable to the glory of Acropolis. On the other hand, these places were nice and quiet - apart from us and a few stray dogs (as a side note, man these stray dogs in Athens are big! I suppose they get enough to eat as they all seem to grow so big) there was hardly anyone around.

Athens is a very hilly city and today our plan included climbing at least one of them to see the panoramic views. We bought a couple of cans of Fix beer to sustain us and off we went to conquer the Philopappos Hill opposite to Acropolis. It was a nice path to the top winding through a lovely forest (did I happen to mention I am missing forests and trees and greenery while living in Malta? Oh, I did mention that a couple of times?) and already on the way up we could catch really great views of Acropolis. The top awarded us with amazing views all over the city, all the way to the blue sea sparkling in the sunshine. It was tough going because of the heat though, especially as on the top of the hill there were no more trees and the little bushes did nothing to provide shade from the relentless sun. On the top of the hill there is also the Philopappos monument, of which I only read afterward that it is a mausoleum in ruins. To be honest, in my opinion it looked better from the distance...

All this climbing made us hungry and once we got back down, we grabbed another cheap and tasty veggie pita/gyros lunch, followed by gorgeous espresso freddo. We figured there were still plenty of hills to go so why stop there - next stop: Lycabettus Hill. At least you can't say we are not getting enough exercise today - of course sightseeing always includes loads of walking, but this constant treading uphill must be even more effective! Once again, the views were well worth the hike. On the top of the hill there was also a cafe-restaurant (we were pretty sure it would be budget-breakingly expensive so skipped it) and a small church, which is a lovely sight in itself with all its pure white glory.

All this hiking in the heat had really tired us. We decided to get back to the hotel (stopping for some chocolate mousse on the way though - well you need some energy with all this hiking!) to pick up the little luggage we had (oh the glory of travelling just with handluggage!) and headed to our host Sofia's place. She turned out to be an absolutely lovely person with lots of interesting stories to share. We spent the Saturday night at her place chatting and drinking retsina, nightlife held absolutely no appeal to us!
