Malta's Notte Bianca 2016

Maltahan on tunnetusti eloisa paikka täynnä kaikenmaailman tapahtumia. Yksi vuosittainen kulttuuritapahtuma Vallettassa on nimeltään Notte Bianca (valkoinen yö italiaksi), jossa museot, kirkot yms. kulttuurikohteet ovat auki keskiyöhön asti ilmaiseksi.

St. John's Co-Cathedral

Malta certainly is a lively place with more than its share of different sort of events. One annual cultural event in Valletta is called Notte Bianca (white night in Italian) where museums, churches and other cultural sights are open until midnight free of charge. Apart from that there are all sorts of happenings on the streets – music, art installations, dance performances, you name it. Last year we got really excited about this and headed out with much enthusiasm thinking we will visit all those museums we didn’t want to pay for. What we didn’t take into account were the crowds… first of all any event in Malta tends to get pretty crowded, secondly free events are even more popular, third Valletta is so small and the streets are so narrow that throngs of people quickly make it a rather unpleasant place to be. Therefore last year, despite our great plans, we only managed to visit the St. John’s Co-Cathedral and the National Library (latter is actually always free which we didn’t know last year) – there were such horrendous queues to all the places that we gave up on any other visits. However it was nice to have seen at least the cathedral and the library, both well worth a visit.

Treasures of the National Library

State Room

The President's Throne

This year we were wiser and decided to head out early going straight to the places we missed last year. The event supposedly starts at 7pm so we headed to Valletta well before that. Even then there were quite a lot of people but at least we managed to get into the beginning of the queue to the Grandmaster’s Palace which also functions as the office of the President of Malta. It is one of those places we have been planning to visit for ages but now we finally got there. You can find amazingly decorated State rooms, one more gorgeous than the other with their fine wallpapers and matching carpets and magnificently painted ceilings. There is also the Armoury where you can see all sorts of old weapons from cannons to guns as well as the impossibly heavy-looking armours the knights used to wear. A really interesting place to visit, I’m so glad we finally made it there! From there it is a short walk to the theatre Teatru Manoel which I wanted to see in any case. Now as a bonus they were doing free 30-minute shows of Shakespeare. Also here we were the first ones in the queue for the 8pm showing, however it was so late that we ended up standing there at least 30 minutes waiting to get in. Only at this stage did we find out that the showing will be in Maltese and the next one would be in English… the hell with it, the point of going there was to see the theatre from inside (and to sit down!) and we didn’t want to start queuing up all over again for the next show so we watched it in Maltese then. That’s an experience, I suppose, watching a play without understanding a word. In any case the theatre is really impressive, like a smaller version of La Scala in Milan with its wooden boxed decorated with gold leaf and beautifully decorated ceiling. I definitely want to visit again to see a whole play or maybe a concert – the acoustics are meant to be world-class as well.

Teatru Manoel

Courtyard of the Grandmaster's Palace

If we had been a little bit more energetic and tolerant I would have still liked to visit the National Archaeological Museum but two hours of crowds was enough was us. Valletta is pretty lively even on a regular day and without a doubt the little streets with their numerous bars and restaurants were tempting but too many people is just too many people and queuing gets on my nerves and feet. We left at around 9pm and narrowly missed the even bigger crowds just making their way into the city… good timing!
