Apulia Osa 1: Bari Puglia Part 1: Bari

It's been a while since we visited anywhere outside Malta! As I happened to get three days off in a row and we found a particularly cheap flight from Malta to Bari, we decided to do a spontaneous long weekend in  Puglia, Southern Italy. While having visited many parts of Italy before, this region was completely unknown to us.

Miten sinne pääsee?

Bariin tulee paljon turisteja, sillä siellä on kansainvälisen lentokentän lisäksi lauttasatama, josta menee lauttoja muun muassa Kreikkaan, Kroatiaan sekä Montenegroon. Vaikka monet turistit ovat läpikulkumatkalla, kyllä Barissa viihtyy helposti pari päivää tutkaillen viehättävää vanhaa kaupunkia.

Lentokenttä on vaivaiset 8 kilometriä kaupungin keskustasta, mikä tekee matkanteosta helppoa. Kentältä kaupunkiin ja takaisin pääsee joko taksilla (kiinteä hinta 23€), junalla (5€), shuttle busilla (4€) tai paikallisbussilla (90 senttiä etukäteen ostetulla lipulla, 1,5€ kuskilta ostetulla lipulla) eli valinnanvaraa löytyy joka budjetille.

How to get there?

Bari gets its fair share of tourists as apart from the international airport there is a ferry harbour where you can catch a ferry to for instance Greece, Croatia or Montenegro. Although many tourists here are just passing by, Bari is well worth stopping for a couple of days at least.

The airport is only 8 kilometres from the city centre, making the transfer easy. You can get to and from the airport by either a taxi (fixed rate 23€), train (5€), shuttle bus (4€) or local bus (90 cents with a pre-paid ticket, 1,5€ when buying the ticket from the driver) so you have choices suiting every budget.

Bari Old Town

Interior and exterior of Basilica di San Nicola

Sights

Most of the sights are concentrated in the compact old town area which is a thoroughly charming area to wander around aimlessly. Lungomare or the sea front area rewards you with lovely views over the sea but what I liked even more are the tiny narrow alleys that are too small for cars. The residents of the old town get around along the impossibly cute streets by their bicycles or Vespas and do not seem to be in a hurry getting anywhere. There are churches in every corner, most notable ones include Basilica di San Nicola and Bari Cathedral. Both of them are a little modest-looking on the outside but with richly decorated interiors that you can visit for free. In the cathedral you may also visit the archeological site underneath the church itself for worthy 3€ fee.

Swabian Castle on the side of the old town is currently being used for art exhibitions. Unfortunately during our visit there were no temporary exhibitions, leaving the castle with not that much to see. There was however a video room where you could watch a short film on the history of the castle (and rest the tourists' tired feet in a comfortably warm room!) and visit a gallery of undeniably impressive-looking plaster casts of different ornaments collected from churches all over Puglia. Unfortunately the visitors have no access to the walls or the towers of the castle so you can forget about the sweeping views over the town. However, at the very reasonable fee of 3€ Swabian castle is still worth a visit.

Also outside the old town Bari is full of amazing architecture, such as the numerous theatres (for example Teatro Petruzzelli and Teatro Margherita), the railway station and in my book pretty much all the buildings - so if you enjoy beautiful baroque buildings you will have time for little else than snapping pictures! However, if shopping is your thing Bari also has great opportunities for that. Shopping streets are filled with famous luxury brands as well as less-known Italian brands that despite their affordability seem of great quality.

Teatro Petruzzelli

Bari is a charming place to spend a couple of days enjoying the beauty of the city as well as the laid-back life style together with irresistible food and wine. Next we will head to the sister city (or bitter rival, at least if we talk about football!) Lecce!
